Saving Face – Skin Care 101  Part 1

I work with a lot of clients who want to look their best.  They all want to look as feminine and passable as possible.  These clients look to me to make them beautiful, but when I ask three simple questions.

  • What do you use to clean your face?
  • How often do you moisturize?
  •  Do you wear sunscreen daily?

Clients tend to not have an answer or the answer shows they do put much thought into a very important thing – Skin Care.

So I thought I would write a three part series on basic skin care.   Makeup always goes on smoother, looks better and last longer on well cared for skin always

While many will say skin care is something women do, more and more men are starting to pay attention because of skin cancer.  While wearing sunscreen and working to prevent skin cancer are important, for someone transitioning or expressing a feminine demeanor – Skin Care is your first step in being your best feminine self.

There are three basics in Skin Care

  • Cleansing
  • Replenish
  • Protecting

Let’s start with Cleansing.  We all know it’s an important part of good skin care.   But what’s the purpose of cleansing the skin?  It’s to surround, loosen and help make the removal of dirt, debris, germs, excess and product applied to the skin easy to remove.

Many people have rough, dry skin, not because their skin is naturally rough and dry, but because they are using a cleanser that may be harmful to their skin.  Many people think our skin needs to feel dry and tight after washing to be clean.  They think they have to scrub hard to get the dirt off.  Many of them don’t know the cleanser/soap they are using on their skin may be doing more harm than good.

There are three main types of facial soap – Bar Soaps, Liquid Cleanser, and Facial Cleansers

Bar soaps are the most irritating to the skin, but the best at getting dirt and grim.

Liquid Cleanser while less irritating to the skin, they don’t work as well on oily skin.

Facial Cleansers are the mildest on the skin, but may not completely remove the all the oil and dirt on your face.

So what to do?  Start by using the mildest cleanser possible.  If you find the cleanser, is not cleaning as well as you’d like, add the use of a washcloth for the perfect manual exfoliator.  But PLEASE scrub lightly!

Here are my favorite bamboo washcloths and a link where you can get them on Amazon for $15.99.

Here is my secret, I use Ponds Cold Cream to clean my face.  That’s right the same stuff your grandmother used.

The combinations of water and oil help to clean, moisturize, soften and soothe my skin.  I especially love using it to remove my makeup.  I take a nice scoop with two fingers and gently massage it all over my face.  Because it’s an emulsion of water in oil, it completely breaks down and surrounds all of the dirt and grim, as well as any makeup on my skin, even the toughest waterproof mascaras.  Once I see the makeup has been broken down I splash a little warm water on my face and use a bamboo washcloth to wipe the cold cream off.  What I’m left with is clean, soft skin!  As an added bounce cold cream can also be used as a dry skin moisturizer softening rough skin, like elbows, knees, and heels, sooth a sunburn and even as a shaving cream.

So remember if you’re looking to be as feminine and passable as possible it starts with your taking care of your skin.
